Here, I consider some cases of fricatives phonologically patterning with liquids, and argue that this phenomenon is merely the extension of the well-known cross-linguistic diversity in the representation of the former. I interpret this as providing support for substance-free representations with a non-trivial phonology-phonetics mapping. I provide a concrete analysis of initial mutations involving sonorants in Scottish Gaelic.
